Ruse was number one in many terms – the first railway station in Bulgaria was constructed here a contemporary publishing house was established a newspaper was issued the city was a headquarter of multiple consulates.Īfter 1878 Ruse was the largest city in Bulgaria Principality, its economy was developing very fast and this had its influence upon the entire appearance of the city. During the Ottoman dominion, Ruse was one of the main cities of the Ottoman Empire, which reflected on its economical and cultural development. Since the 16th century, the city had been known under its Ottoman name – Ruschuk. It had the name of Seksaginta Pristis –Port of the Sixty Boats. The Roman military camp and fortress were established here in the 1st century AD. The close proximity of the river Danube had always had great significance for the development of the city from the Antiquity to the present day. This is one of the largest cities in the country – an important cultural, commercial and industrial center. The population of the city is about 180 000 people. Again I give Grey Line a 5 star rating and I cant imagine the tour being any better that it was.The city of Ruse is situated on the highest right bank of the Danube river, at a distance of 320 km from Sofia, 200 km from Varna and about 300 km from Plovdiv. I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone who is interested learning a piece of history of Romania's southern friends and having a guide who was very pleasant and whose knowledge of the area was second to none. Marinela was very informative about the city and the culture and I came away a lot of information I had no idea existed. She took me to a local Bulgarian restaurant and the food was nice. I was the only person on the tour I so I would have understood if she felt awkward at times but she was fantastic. I has a tour guide called Marinela and she was great. I also want on a walk along the Danube river which was great to see. The City Centre of Ruse was beautiful with a fantastic looking underground church and a couple of museums to with ancient Roman ruins and an underground bunker. It didn't take long to cross the border from Bucharest and it was a very nice scenic journey. I went on this tour on the 27th August and I had a great time.
